Audrey Fenwick, 2017 Midwest Scholarship Winner
One word easily comes to mind when talking with Audrey Fenwick: creative. From music, to cooking, to helping others, she puts her own creative touch on everything she does, including her video essay for our high school scholarship program. Her Indiana Jones-esque story helped her earn $1,000 towards tuition at Glen Oaks Community College.
As an avid musician, Audie – as her mom lovingly calls her – honed her musical talent and discovered a thirst for travel as a violinist for the Kalamazoo Jr. Symphony Orchestra. It’s also where she learned the value of teamwork and collaboration. “Everyone in the orchestra is aiming for perfection, and we work together to achieve that,” said Audrey. She has also been playing piano since she was six years old, and enjoys playing whenever she has a chance.
Her creativity expands into the kitchen as well. She’s working towards becoming a vegan and perfecting recipes that are both delicious and nutritious. Her mom’s current favorites are Audrey’s vegan beef stroganoff and her smoothie bowls.
Audrey also contributes heavily to her community whether it’s playing music for senior citizens, cleaning up litter along the highway, or helping youth during vacation bible school. In fact, she has volunteered over 150 hours of service in just a few years. Audrey’s favorite volunteer project so far has been playing music and singing for residents of a local nursing home: “It’s been so great to watch their faces light up when we perform.”
She would love to combine helping others with travel by becoming a traveling nurse practitioner. Given her dedication to hard work, her experience as a member of the National Honor Society, and her ability to memorize entire books of the bible as part of her participation in the National Pathfinder Bible Experience Quiz Bowls, we have no doubt Audrey will excel at whatever she tries.
