CASSOPOLIS, Mich. – As we roll into storm season, Midwest Energy & Communications (MEC) urges the public to stay safe when encountering fallen power lines.
If strong winds or trees knock down lines, electricity may still be flowing through them. This poses an extreme and potentially deadly safety hazard to humans and animals – even those that aren’t directly touching the lines.
DO NOT attempt to touch a person or object that is in contact with a power line, as the electric current could flow through you.
If a power line falls on your car while you are inside, remain in place if it is safe to do so. The rubber tires can protect you from becoming the electricity's path to ground.
If you must exit the vehicle due to a fire or other imminent danger, follow these steps:
MEC Safety Director Evan demonstrates this method in the following YouTube video: https://youtu.be/V8VxQ8uLNHc
Reporters: While MEC understands the importance of accurate, up-to-date coverage on storms and storm damage, please do not put yourself at risk. MEC asks media representatives to exercise caution using the steps above to ensure safety.
