Outage Preparation Tips
Items to Have On-Hand
- Water and non-perishable food: We recommend one gallon per person, per day plus some for pets. Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed. Food will stay frozen for 36 to 48 hours in a fully-loaded freezer, and about 24 hours in a partially-filled freezer.
- Lanterns/flashlights with extra batteries
- Keep mobile devices charged if outages are imminent. A battery-powered radio is also helpful. If you have a landline, use a corded phone.
- First-aid kit with filled prescriptions
- Moist wipes, hand sanitizer, and garbage bags

Protect Your Appliances
- Turn off all appliances during an outage to avoid a circuit overload when power is restored. Leave on one lamp to know when power is restored.
- Use surge protectors for all electronics and appliances or consider a whole-house surge protector.
Stay Away From Downed Lines
- Stay away from downed power lines and call us immediately to report them.
- Don’t touch a person or object that is in contact with a power line; the electric current could flow through you.
- Stay inside your car if it comes in contact with a power line. If you must exit the vehicle, follow the steps in the video below to remain as safe as possible.
