We're Midwest Energy & Communications (MEC) It’s so nice to meet you! We’re proud to be your new internet and phone partner. We are a local fiber internet and phone provider based in rural southern Michigan. We’re also a cooperative, which means we value people and community first.
We started as an electric cooperative in 1937 and have a rich history of fulfilling our vision of creating vibrant, relevant, sustainable rural communities®. Here is our story.
What’s Happening to Springcom, Inc. and Springport Telephone Company
After over 100 years, the family behind Springcom, Inc. and Springport Telephone Company has decided it’s time for a new adventure. MEC proved the perfect fit to purchase the company, as another business rooted in Michigan for nearly a century.
Springport Medical Clinic will remain open and will not be impacted by this acquisition.
What This Means For You
Right now, you will get the same service at the same rates, with MEC’s local, expert tech support ready to serve your needs.
Later this year, MEC will build fiber optics in your area. At that time, you’ll be asked to switch to our fiber. With our blazing-fast speeds and our free mobile app, you can manage your kids’ online activities, protect your connected devices from hackers, set up guest networks and more. All of this comes with a Wi-Fi 7 router and is backed by local expert support.
Eventually, all services from Springcom, Inc. and Springport Telephone Company will no longer exist. We will be in communication when the time comes.
When This Goes Into Effect
On or about June 1, 2026.

Your account number will remain the same, and you will have several options for paying your bill. See our FAQ section below for more information.

How will I pay my bills or manage my account?
Once the sale is complete, you will be able to use your existing Springcom/Springport account number to register for SmartHub, our free online account payment and management hub. SmartHub is also available as a free mobile app for account management on the go.
We also offer several additional ways to pay your bill.

Will my service change?
At this time, your service is not changing.
However, we are building our ultra-fast, reliable fiber network in your area later this year. Once complete, you will have access to our fiber internet, which includes advanced parental controls, protection from hackers, unlimited data, and a Wi-Fi 7 router at no additional charge. You will also have access to our fiber phone service. Your existing Springport service will eventually terminate, and we’ll notify you in advance of any changes to your service.
When do I get billed for service?
For now, your monthly bill will arrive at the same time it does right now.
Will my account number change?
No. You will keep the same account number that you have now.
What if I am enrolled in autopay?
Yes. Once the sale is complete, you can enroll by phone or online.
Phone: Call 800-492-5989 and follow the prompts.
Online: Enroll for autopay in our SmartHub account management hub. You'll need to register for a SmartHub account using your current Springcom/Springport account number.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes! Your friends and family will still be able to call you at your current phone number – it won’t change.
Can I keep my Springport email address?
Unfortunately, no. Your email address will be retired after May 31, 2026. However, the largest email providers like Google, Apple, and Microsoft let you transfer your account, contacts, and emails. Click below for instructions:

- Step 1: Create a Gmail account
- Step 2: Import emails from your Springport account (scroll to the section called, “Transfer old emails from another email account”)
- Apple iCloud Mail
- Microsoft Outlook
- Step 1: Create an Outlook account
- Step 2: Add both emails to the Outlook app
- Step 3: Export your Springport account to a .pst file
- Step 4 (classic Outlook): Import to your Outlook account
- Step 4 (new Outlook): Open your .pst file and drag and drop emails to the mailbox of your new Outlook account. Click here to see which version of Outlook you have.
- Optional: Install classic Outlook to make importing easier.
What Happens Next?
Later this year, we’re building our reliable, fast fiber internet to bring you the best possible internet and phone services.
Our general construction process goes like this:

The process begins with "walkout" work, which involves surveying an area to determine how and where to put fiber lines.

We build and splice the mainline fiber. This line ultimately connects our service to the greater internet backbone that makes the internet possible.

We build the service drop from our mainline to your property and install a network interface device (NID) box on the side of your home. You do not need to be home for this.

If the construction involves placing cables underground, we call MISS DIG to send a representative to your property to mark underground public utilities. As soon as you see those flags appear, please mark underground sprinklers, pet fences and any other private underground facilities.

The splicing crew visits your property to prepare the fiber line for installation.

We contact you to schedule your in-home installation approximately 2-6 weeks after Step 2 is complete.
We plan to start this process sometime in July and finish by Dec. 31 of this year. Once we’re finished, you’ll be able to choose a shiny new MEC fiber internet and/or fiber phone package!
