In the 1930s, 90% of rural homes didn’t have electricity while 90% of urban homes did. As a result, farmers and other rural dwellers came together to seek help from their legislators to eliminate this disparity and that effort led to the creation of the national electric cooperative program.
That spirit continues today through the Action Committee for Rural Electrification (ACRE). This is the political action committee representing the nation’s electric cooperatives. Strong political relationships are key in our industry. We rely on our elected representatives and other federal officials to help establish policy and implement legislation that benefits our customers, and ACRE gives us a voice in those matters.
Today, more than 30,000 cooperative customers and advocates contribute through the ACRE Owners Program, and it makes a difference.
